Bugesera District, May 17, 2025 LWD, was honored to welcome a female UK cyclist and Plan Rwanda representatives to witness the impact of the project in transforming young lives through cycling and vocational training.

The visit began with an introduction to the Bike4Future Project, which leverages cycling not only as a sport but as a tool for climate awareness, youth empowerment, and social inclusion. Guests joined the cyclist team for a meaningful ride from Nyamata to Ntarama, showcasing how the initiative promotes eco-friendly transport while building youth confidence and community connection.
At Nelson Mandela Technical Secondary School, the team engaged with girls currently enrolled in welding training, where the UK cyclist observed their progress and applauded their courage in breaking gender stereotypes. Beyond welding, many young women are also pursuing tailoring and construction, gaining technical skills that are helping them become financially independent.

The journey continued to Nyamata, where the visitor met young women’s running repair services, selling bikes. The UK cyclist was especially inspired by the mechanics’ professionalism and determination, stating:
“These girls are not just fixing bikes they’re fixing perceptions. What a powerful shift to witness.”
The day concluded with a joint meeting between Plan International Rwanda, the UK cyclist, and the LWD team to reflect on the achievements, discuss the sustainability plan, and explore new ways to grow the impact of the project.
The Bike4Future project continues to pave the way for youth especially girls to thrive in non-traditional fields, build climate resilience, and take part in Rwanda’s development journey
